Exploring Shakespeare

Day Time Frequency Venue
Friday 3:00pm to 4:30pm Weekly Fairfield Rail Station

Be Daring! Read Shakespeare! Compare Orson Welles and Laurence Olivier playing Othello! This weekly class grew out of and complements Shakespeare for Everyone. During the year we tackle a few of Shakespeare’s plays, roughly one a term. Plays we’ve read in the past two years include Romeo and Juliet, Measure for Measure, The Merchant of Venice, The Tempest and King Lear. In 2017 we are thinking we may begin with the Scottish play, Macbeth. Members of the class read aloud and explore each play, talking it over, discussing key speeches and difficult language, and re-reading. Towards the end of our time with each play, we watch excerpts from a range of DVDs and discuss the approaches the directors have taken to key scenes. The aim is for all members to find each play more and more exciting and rewarding to read. Max Nos. 12
