U3A Darebin Current Affairs Group, 15th June 2017
The Darebin U3A Current affairs group were scheduled to have Alex Bhathal as our guest speaker on June 15.Alex is a social worker with many additional responsibilities including president of the Darebin Energy and Sustainability Institute, and Convener of the Global Greens Women’s Network.
Alex was the Greens candidate for the Federal seat of Batman for the 2016 election, and narrowly lost to the Labour incumbent.
Unfortunately Alex was unable to attend due to ill health, but Gurm Sekhon kindly agreed to substitute on short notice.
Gurm is a Victorian Greens pioneer and party elder. He is a project manager and community development worker.
We enjoyed an informal discussion on many topics including climate change, carbon tax, wealth distribution, renewable energy, student tertiary loans and death duties.
Renewable versus nuclear energy was an interesting topic given that nuclear is very” clean” Gurm advised the Greens support renewable because of the safety concerns that still prevail along with the nuclear waste disposal problem
We were delighted to learn that Alex has been nominated as the candidate for Batman for the next federal election, when a true local with the community at heart will win the day and see Alex over the line.
The next morning tea for our members will be held on Monday the 3rd of July at 10:00am in the Northcote Senior Citizens’ Centre.
Join us to hear Scott Whitaker speak about the hotels, their history and that of the settlements and railway lines. Author of a series entitled Railway Hotels of Australia, Scott has many anecdotes illustrating the mood of the era in which they thrived.
Please bring a plate to share and collect your door prize ticket for a chance to win a signed book. Books for sale at discounted price.
Tea and coffee will be provided, but please bring something delicious to share with everyone.
Do you know of anyone who would be willing to take on a task which has ‘great rewards but no pay’? U3A Darebin is always looking for tutors for additional classes in areas where existing classes either have a waiting list or are in high demand, particularly in areas such as yoga, using iPads and tablets, and beginners languages.
U3A Darebin needs members to distribute brochures in West Preston and Reservoir. Please contact the office if you can help, or if you know of a local community organisation that might be willing to display our brochures.
